June 19, 2016 – Since 2014, VT Engage and Smart Beginnings New River Valley have managed an AmeriCorps grant that has served hundreds of children in our region through Reading Hour, a preschool mentorship program, and created memorable service experiences for participating members.
For the third year of the program, VT Engage will no longer be co-managing the grant, but we wanted to spread the word that YOU should join this great team!
Through the Reading Hour AmeriCorps team, like-minded individuals help children build strong futures and a love for learning through an engaging preschool mentorship program in Southwestern Virginia. The 2016-17 team will begin serving on August 15, 2016.
As a Reading Hour AmeriCorps State/National Member, you will bring your passion, creativity, unique experiences, and skills to help empower many young children. You will serve in a community you call home, whether since birth or since becoming a student. You can do this through the role of Center Coordinator.
Center Coordinators (1) 675, (3) 450, or (12) 300 hour positions: Members will oversee literacy activities at one or more childcare centers, including the oversight and coordination of the Reading Hour volunteer mentoring program. Members will be expected to implement other literacy enhancing projects to fit childcare center needs as well as participate in team meetings and national days of service. Students are eligible for the 300-hour positions.
Reading Hour AmeriCorps members receive many benefits of service, including:

675-hour position: complete 675 hours of service (~13 hours/week for 52 weeks) to successfully complete their term. They receive $291/month living stipend and $3, 500 AmeriCorps Education Award after completion of hours.
450-hour position: complete 450 hours of service (~9 hours/week for 52 weeks) to successfully complete their term. They receive $156/month living stipend and $1, 527.45 AmeriCorps Education Award after completion of hours.
300-hour position: complete 300 hours of service (~6 hours/week for 52 weeks or ~10 hour/week for 32 week of academic semesters) to successfully complete their term. They receive $104/month living stipend and $1,250 AmeriCorps Education Award after completion of hours.
Please note all positions are contingent upon renewal of grant funding from the AmeriCorps State/National offices.
